Why rent a GPS rather than purchase it?

Generally, handheld units are for off road use, however some units can be used eith on or off the road. |
| Where are you likely to use it? |
Systems are available with maps for different areas. This may be somewhat limited or broader depending upon the unit. Example: Systems may have Maps for North America or Western and Central Europe. Systems with more internal storage may have maps for both North America and Western and Central Europe. |
| Will you be walking, driving, or both? |
Many newer systems have the ability to function properly whether you are driving or walking. This is a relatively new function and many users are not even aware of it. Consider though, that this type of new function and technology becomes available quite frequently. In many cases it is not a software update on an existing system, it requires the purchase of a newer model. |
| How often will you use it? |
Maps and software are constantly changing. In many cases a software update will not even effect you, and if it does, it can easily be downloaded and installed at no cost.
Maps are updated and made available periodically also. Unlike software updates, updated maps are not Free and not easily downloaded and installed. If you will only be traveling to an area one time, it may not be practical to purchase a system for that occasion. |
| How many do you need? |
Businesses and groups often have events or special uses that do not repeat, or do repeat infrequently. Again, It may not be practical to purchase and maintain an inventory of GPS Systems for these one time, or occasional events. |
